Punjab the Land of Five Rivers, has an ancient history which goes back to 3000 B.C. Being strategically located between the rivers Indus and the Jamuna and bounded by the Himalayan mountains towards North, it has been ruled over by several Indian and foreign rulers during its checkered history. It has also seen various territorial, political and administrative changes under a variety of rulers. The long line of its rulers include Alexander, Seleucus, Mauryan kings, Buddhist emperor Kanishka, Rajputs, Mahmud of Ghazani, Shehabudin Gori, the Lodhi Sultans, Durannis, the Mughals, the Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the British and finally the Indian government.
